Title
Post-medieval kosher meat seal or token
Description
English:

A broken and damaged lead alloy Jewish Kosher food seal of post-medieval or modern date. The seal comprises a disc, but the runner is broken off. While the reverse is plain, the obverse shows Yiddish or Hebrew letters.

In Yiddish these seals are known as plumbas (i.e. leads). Other examples usually bear the abbreviation for 'Chief of the Rabbinical Court' (Powell 2012: 1). A number of similar examples are recorded on the PAS database. Other examples are illustrated and discussed in Powell, D. (2012) 'Those Jewish Plumbas' Leaden Tokens Telegraph, March/April 2012, issue 82. See eg SOM-6518A0.
