Title
Post Medieval Seal Matrix
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy seal matrix, probably Post Medieval in date, c. 17th-18th century AD. The seal is oval in shape and bears the Hebrew letters כשר, which indicate that a product is 'kosher', probably in reference to the preparation of meat. Another character called an 'aleph' (א) is engraved below the larger characters, which refers to an unidentified characteristic of the product (see below for discussion). The perimeter of the seal matrix has an incised border. The seal has a conical body and handle, which is surmounted by a trefoil suspension loop with a countersunk circular loop hole. It has an even reddish-brown patina. A small portion of one of the trefoil knops is missing. The seal matrix measures 15.6 mm long by 13 mm wide; it stands 25.4 mm high and is 12 mm wide at the side-fleurs of the trefoil; it weighs 5.55 grams.
