Description

Sgt. Nathaniel Taylor, 161st Field Artillery, Kansas Army National Guard, performs a system check on one of the solar shade battery storage modules. Mud and dirt cling to the exterior of the module after more than a year of continual operation.

Above Tucker are linked flexible photo voltaic cells on the surface of the solar shade. These cells convert collected sunlight to usable electricity then stored in Hawker HMMWV (Humvee) batteries. The system was first assembled at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti more than a year ago and is being used by units with Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa. Maj. Tim Franklin with U.S. Army Africa and Tucker of the U.S. Army Natick Research, Development and Engineering Center in Massachusetts recently checked out the system as part of a limited military user assessment recently.
