Summary edit

Description
English: The preparation of alanine from propionic acid, first by bromination via the Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky halogenation to form 2-bromopropanoic acid and then ammonolysis to the racemate of the amino acid. The method is reported in Organic Syntheses in the papers doi:10.15227/orgsyn.009.0004 and doi:10.15227/orgsyn.011.0020.
Date
Source The file was produced by modifying File:Synthesis of alanine - 2.png, an existing file stored on Commons that was uploaded by Rifleman 82 in August 2009. It was constructed by EdChem on 14 April 2019 for use in the article on propionic acid and so the first step and HVZ reaction needed to be shown (the original only shows the ammonolysis). The original file was modified using Microsoft Paint.
