English: U.S. Fish and Wildlife rangers setting a "prescribed burn" in the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge in Montana in the United States. "Prescribed burns" are man-made fires which are carefully monitored and controlled. The "prescribed burn" mimics the role of natural fire in a legally protected area. It burns underbrush and dead wood, reducing the danger from wildfire. Certain plants require fire in order to release their seeds or for seeds to germinate. The prescribed burn also clears areas, so that the life cycle of a forest, prairie, or riverbottom can be renewed. Prescribed burns also released nutrients, carbon, and minerals back into the soil. |
