DescriptionPrickshaw Dams, near Rochdale, Lancashire - geograph.org.uk - 854019.jpg |
English: Prickshaw Dams, near Rochdale, Lancashire Just when these small dams were built and why, I do not know, but they were certainly there by 1848, much earlier than Spring Mill Reservoir, seen on the extreme left above, and also pre-dating the railway up the Spodden valley. There were three dams in all, the smallest is not visible, being below the two shown here. They may have been built to serve a small cotton waste mill just below. This was then an area of small coal pits and sandstone quarries. |
