Title / Titre : Prince Regent, Future George IV / Prince régent, futur George IV Creator(s) / Créateur(s) : Henry Bone (1755-1834) Date(s) : August 1815 / août 1815 Reference No. / Numéro de référence : MIKAN 2837212 / C-095758 collectionscanada.gc.ca/ourl/res.php?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&... collectionscanada.gc.ca/ourl/res.php?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&... Credit / Mention de source : Library and Archives Canada, C-095758 / Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, C-095758 Description / Descriptions : Although called by some the "first gentleman of Europe" for his gracious manner, the future George IV (1762-1830) was in reality the antithesis to this, as one of Britain's more notorious and unpopular monarchs. The eldest son of King George III and Queen Charlotte, before ascending to the British throne in 1820, he had squandered large sums of money and had been involved in many scandals. The artist of this work was made Principal Painter to the Prince in 1800, and one year later, Principal Enamel Painter to George III, a post he retained under both George IV and William IV. An inscription with this miniature states that it was painted after an original portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence, court painter to the King. The artist's works on ivory are rare, although it is known that he produced large quantities of enamels, mostly copies, for general sale. |
