Summary edit

Description
English: Principia Book 1 Proposition 30 – Area of a Parabolic Sector.

In Book 1 Proposition 30 of the Principia has a method for finding the areas of parabolic sectors. No details of Newton’s derivation of this method have been found. It is possible that he noticed a property of the circle drawn through the Focus, the Principal Vertex and any point on a Parabola related to the area of the parabolic sector between the axis and the radius to the point on the parabola. He states that he used the method in his early attempts to calculate the orbits of comets. It is possible to extend the method in Proposition 30 to produce a more general result.
