Description
English: Priyamvada Gopal on the History of Abolition & Rebellion

An insurgent empire—is that what we’re seeing in the US today? In this timely conversation with Laura Flanders, author and scholar Dr. Priyamvada Gopal discusses her book, Insurgent Empire, which corrects the record on who liberated whom in the overthrow of slavery and colonialism from the West Indies to Egypt to India. As uprisings continue against white supremacy and capitalism across the world, Gopal urges us to remember that colonized peoples, not enlightened liberals with a conscience, have always been the lead agents in their own liberation. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the most successful liberation movements reshaped ideas around freedom and self-determination in ways that built enduring alliances. We are left with the question: how do we make radical change together?
