personal supervision which isall important is difficult with the larger number. Having decided to hold a class for the first aid certificate thefact is announced in the monthly battalion orders, and details givenof days, dates and places when they will take place. To these lec-tures both those who are already trained as well as those wantingthe certificate are admitted. There is a stretcher drill every Mondaynight during the greater part of the year which the ambulance re-cruits can attend for their twelve qualifying drills. The subjects to be taught are those laid down in the Manualfor the Medical Staff* Corps and comprise Anatomical and Physiological Outlines. Bandages and Bandaging—triangular. Fractures and the apparatus for their treatment. Dislocations and Sprains. Wounds: Dressings and their application. Cases of Emergency and their immediate treatment. Bleeding, burns, dislocations, drowning, fits, poisoning,shock, sprains. The various methods of lifting and carrying wounded.

In my own case the men all belong to the artisan classand however eager they may be to learn, it is absolutely necessaryto present the subject to them in a simple and intelligible form.—stripping it as much as posible of technicality and giving to themonly the essentials. An elementary knowledge of anatomy andphysiology must be insisted on that they may appreciate the teach-ing of first aid: but give no more than is sufficient to explain thework they will be called upon to do—train not for an examinationbut for the treatment of emergencies.
