Description
English: A profile view of Seine Seamount near the Portuguese island of Madeira, showing a flat-topped seamount (today called "guyot"). In fact, many of the seamounts discovered prior to the invention of the echo sounder were flat-topped seamounts having a wide surface area on the top increasing the probability of discovery by widely spaced piano-wire soundings.
Français : Coupe de profil du banc de la Seine, au large de l'île portugaise de Madeire, montrant un mont sous-marin à sommet plat. De tels monts sont aujourd'hui appelée des guyots. La plupart des monts sous-marins découverts avant l'invention du sonar furent des guyots, dont le large sommet plat facilitait la découverte par sondage.
