Today's plan was all about riding the new tram line in Helsinki, which Laura did in November when it was very new. The Helsinki Metro is a wonderful light railway that serves Helsinki from the East and now West, but think of it as like the old Overhead Railway in Liverpool running along the shore. There are swathes of population centres to the north of the city that it doesn't go near. Enter the new 15 tram. This is a route that basically forms a ring through the outer suburbs (think Queens Drive if we're speaking Liverpool again) and although I think it was conceived as a tram route it was serviced by buses. It was hugely popular, and with more housing springing up the decision was made to install the tram tracks. It's a triumph. Very, very pleasant. |
