selected with theutmost care, and to meet actual demands all the rigid economy wasexercised in matters which the public did not feel, and few of themrealized the actual poverty of the institution. From the first, the direct-ors bent their utmost energies towards co-operation with the schools, andas early as their second annual statement they were able to report greatsuccess in this direction. In June, 1888, the library removed to its newhome in the Burroughs building, the alterations of which had been soskillfully planned in accordance with modern library requirements thatfour years experience has shown very little that could be changed for thebetter. In 1889, by the consolidation of town and city, and by therevision of the grand list, the income of the library was increased toabout twelve thousand dollars annually, and its field of usefulness hasbeen much enlarged. The directors have recently secured a large plotof land in the rear of the present building to provide for future needs.
