הגיע מ חופי יוון פּוּמִיס או חֲפָף הוא סלע פירוקלסטי, סוג של זכוכית געשית הנוצר מהתקררות מהירה של לבה עשירה בסיליקה ובבועות גז ואדי מים. הסלע הנקבובי קל עד כדי ציפה על פני מים ויצירת "רפסודות פומיס".
שימוש בשם "פומיס" נעשה בימי הביניים ומקורו בלטינית: pumex – אבן או סלע,[1] אך מופיע עוד קודם לכן, בשנת 325 לפנה"ס במונח יווני המתאר את מרקמו הנקבובי של הסלע שמשמעותו: אכול תולעים.[2] גם כינויו העממי נובע ממרקמו: "אבן ספוג".[3]
