Annotations: This Granite Temple was discovered by Mariette in 1853. The date and object of the temple is not definitely known. Mariette found in it nine statues of Gephren which would seem to indicate that he built it as a place of assembly for the worshippers of his [manes?]. If so it is the only temple of the time of primeval monarchy- the architecture is of the simplest possible form. Several dog headed apes were found in the sand. Dog headed ape are sacred to Toth. The God of the moon. Dispenser of time weigher of souls in infernal regions. The Dog headed ape and Ibis are sacred to him.
