This is taken on the path into the quarry. To the left (North) is the deepest part. This quarry is the one place here I have seen Red Deer, fighting in the rut. Supposedly there are none in Lincolnshire woodlands, but the herd from Grimsthorpe was accidentally released during WW2 when the park was used for tank practice, and the deer moved to Rockingham under their own steam. This location here is part-way along that route, and I consider it feasible that some of the deer did not make the whole journey. I have seen characteristic fewmets, although local foresters claim there are only fallow and roe deer here. |
