Description

Quartz-pebble conglomerate from the Mississippian of Ohio, USA.

This is a weathered surface of a large conglomerate-pebbly sandstone talus block derived from the Berne Conglomerate. The Berne is one of four members in the siliciclastics-dominated Logan Formation (Lower Mississippian) of eastern Ohio. It is a relatively thin bed that occurs at the base of the Logan, but is sometimes absent. The bed varies in thickness and lithology. It ranges from a coarse-grained sandstone to a pebbly sandstone to a conglomeratic sandstone to a conglomerate. The pebbles are composed of quartz. The base of the Berne is an unconformity - a significant sequence boundary.
