Hela sitt vuxna liv bodde han i Östertälje. Han utbildade sig till elektriker och arbetade under många år på Scania. Hilmers far var skräddare, mamma hade arbetat som hembiträde. Hilmers stora intresse var sång, operett och revy. Han tog sånglektioner hos flera sångpedagoger, främst hos friherinnan von Vegesack i Stockholm. Uppträdde med sin välklingande tenorröst i en kör bl a på Skansen och IOGT:s kongresser samt andra tillställningar. Det andra allt överskuggande intresset var fotografering. Han utbildade sig hos självaste Christer Sjöholm. Hilmer hade ett bra sinne för komposition av en bild, och ett bra öga för dokumentation. Kameran kom väl till pass under hans resor till Italien; Frankrike och Grekland. Med Hilmers bilder har museet fått en värdefull samling från svenskars charterresor till nämnda länder. Gatuliv i Södertälje och Stockholm, gymnastik-, revy- och cirkusbilder från 1960-70-80-talen är en annan värdefull fotografisk källa. Vid Hilmer Larsons bortgång 1999 fick museet genom dödsboet mottaga en diger samling av svart/vita kopior och även diapositiv. Hilmer Larson bodde på Vretensväg 4 i Östertälje.
