De eregalerij met aan het eind de nachtwachtzaal. op deze foto ontbreken nog de decoratieve schilderingen, die vanaf 1900 de vakken boven de kabinetten sierden. In de kabinetten hingen 17de-eeuwse schilderijen. Eregalerij met aangrenzende kabinetten, gezien naar het zuiden. Het decoratiepatroon zoals ontworpen door Cuypers is hier nog niet volledig uitgewerkt. De schilderingen van Georg Sturm zijn nog niet aangebracht in de boogvelden boven de kabinetten. De open sluitstenen van de gewelven 'doen een spaarzaam licht binnenvallen, zoodat de verlichting der vier aan elke zijde der galerij zich bevindende laterale zalen en der Rembrandtzaal krachtiger schijnt' (De Stuers p.34) Cuypers gebruikte voor de constructie een combinatie van stenen gewelven en kolommen met smeedijzeren balken. Bij de decoratie van de balken, samensteld uit getrokken en gesmeed ijzer, is de constructie als uitgangspunt genomen. 'Flenzen en klinknagels' maken onderdeel uit van het decoratiepatroon. Granito vloer met mozaïek, voor patroon zie De Stuers afb. 12 fig B. Het niveauverschil tussen de galerij en de kabinetten wordt in 1925 geëgaliseerd. |
