A 10 INCH MUZZLE LOADING RIFLED ARMSTRONG GUN NUMBERED 17 WHICH WAS MANUFACTURED AT THE ROYAL GUN FOUNDRY, WOOLWICH, ENGLAND IN 1869. THIS GUN FORMED PART OF THE MAIN ARMAMENT OF HMVS CERBERUS. IN 1884 DURING GUNNERY PRACTICE CRACKS WERE FOUND AROUND THE RIGHT HAND TRUNNION AND THE GUN WAS SENT TO A FOUNDRY IN BALLARAT FOR REPAIR. THE REPAIR WORK WAS BEYOND THE CAPACITY OF THE FOUNDRY AND THE GUN REMAINED IN BALLARAT. AFTER SOME YEARS ON DISPLAY IN A PARK IN BALLARAT IT WAS MOVED ABOUT 1986 TO HMAS CERBERUS." | ||||
