Stema oraşului Călan, potrivit anexei nr. 1, se compune dintr-un scut roşu, despicat printr-un pal de azur; în partea dreaptă se află oala de turnat fontă, din care curge metal peste o jumătate de roată dinţată, totul din aur. În partea stângă, două spice de grâu, de argint. Scutul este timbrat de o coroană murală de argint, formată din trei turnuri crenelate.

Semnificaţia elementelor însumate: - oala de turnat fontă reprezintă activitatea tradiţională a locuitorilor în domeniul metalurgiei; - roata dinţată face aluzie la produsele realizate de-a lungul vremii de unitatea metalurgică din Călan, produse cărora li s-a conferit "Steaua calităţii" în Spania în anul 1992; - spicele de grâu sunt o aluzie la valorificarea produselor agricole obţinute de locuitorii oraşului, îndeletnicire de tradiţie, având în vedere zona geografică în care este situată aşezarea; - palul aminteşte de Râul Strei, care împarte oraşul în două părţi, contribuind la dinamizarea vieţii sociale şi la înfrumuseţarea urbei.
