English: Rabbit Stew The brown rat population on Canna increased to an estimated 10 000 and was threatening to kill off the Canna mouse and seabird colonies including the manx shearwater.
The island decided to embark on a rat eradication programme, costing almost half a million pounds, and was recently declared rat-free. It flew in expert rat catchers from New Zealand and a rat has not been seen for 2 years. As a consequence the rabbit numbers have increased although they make good prey for the birds of prey. This year the tea shop has introduced rabbit stew onto the menu and it is going down very well! The quad bike is parked outside Canna's tearoom. The islanders were initially wary of quad bikes, wondering if they would be worth the money but are now said to be invaluable. |
