Italiano: MASCHERA WALU - Maschera facciale zoomorfa di forma rettangolare con ampie cavità orbitali entro cui sono posti grandi occhi forati, rappresenta una lepre. Sulla sommità, tra le orecchie, è piantato un ferro.
Secondo uno dei miti dogon la maschera lepre sarebbe stata inventata da un cacciatore che eveva ucciso e mangiato uno di questi animali. Più in generale le maschere presso i Dogon servono a riassorbire il disordine portato dalla morte e danzano in occasione dei funerali per consentire ai defunti di passare nell'altro mondo. Le maschere dei primi animali uccisi ricordano che i Dogon sono stati cacciatori prima di diventare agricoltori. |
