Italiano: Maschera facciale Kpelye - Volto ovale con terminazione inferiore a punta (mento). Occhi costituiti da fessure sottolineati dalla linea curva ripetuta dell'arcata sopraccigliare. Naso lungo e sottile, bocca ovale e forata con denti in mostra, con prognatismo caratteristico dello stile senufo. Scarificazioni sulle guance e sulla fronte. Sulla sommità figura di uccello (calao); alla base due elementi sporgenti in cui si è soliti vedere delle gambe. Tutto intorno proiezioni laterali geometriche che rappresentano dettagli dell'acconciatura.
Le maschere kpelye rappresentano l'ideale della bellezza femminile e quando appaiono in coppia durante i riti di iniziazione della società Poro rievocano l'evento della creazione dell'essere umano. Sulla sommità appaiono figure emblematiche che indicano l'appartenenza a un certo gruppo sociale, come nel caso del calao, uccello che è simbolo della "casta" dei fabbri. La società Poro è un'associazione organizzata in classi d'età di cui fanno parte tutti i maschi senufo; costituisce la principale istituzione sociale, politica, religiosa ed educativa della società senufo e ha un corrispettivo femminile nella società Sandogo. |
