The tunnel is 2J4 miles inlength through the Cascade Mountains,about 40 miles east of Seattle, Wash.,and the entire work has been constructedby the company by its own employees. New Railway Bridge. The single track bridge over theSusquehanna river at Harrisburg whichthe Cumberland Valley railroad—apart of the Pennsylvania system—isnow using, will be replaced by a mod-ern arch bridge. The present struc-ture is a steel deck truss bridge of 25spans, supported by stone piers. Theproposed bridge will have 44 spans andwill carry two tracks. The presentpiers will be utilized and additionalpiers built. The bridge will be 4,000feet long. The foundations are alreadycompleted above the water level, andthe balance of the work will be placedunder contract within a short time.This is the first construction work ofany magnitude to be undertaken by thePennsylvania System for more than ayear, but indications point to develop-ments in the near future.

A.Willson & Co., Reading, Pa., the makersof eye protectors. It was given in ack-nowledgment of the merits of the threeWillson industrial styles—the Willsonsafety glass, the new Willson goggle andthe Albex eye protector. This is thehighest award ever given to the makersof eye protectors. Workmens Compensation. By the action of New York, Kentucky,Louisiana and Maryland, exactly twenty-four states, or one-half of those in theUnion, now have workmens compensa-tion aws. Massachusetts, after two yearsexperience, raised the benefits under itslaw from 50 per cent, to 66 2-3 per cent,of wages, and New Jersey also liberalizedits rates, though to a less extent.
