. Of the several convents, all worthy ofattention, perhaps that of San Estevan, or San Domingo, will attractthe American visitor, since it was here that Columbus resided twoyears, from 1484 to i486, when he was pleading for authority from thecatcdraticos for the promulgation of his views respecting the shapeof the earth. He did not gain it, as the New World knows, and it wassix years later that he did demonstrate the correctness of his theoriesby the discovery that brought consternation to the ecclesiastics. Salamanca abounds not only in numerous buildings of a publiccharacter, but in private houses of ostentatious and beautiful archi-tecture. Perhaps that known as the Casa de las Conchas (or houseof the shells) is the most curious, covered as its facade is with imita-tions of shells. The river upon which the city is situated is crossedby a noble bridge of Roman foundation, of the time of Trajan, andcarries us back to the ancient Salamantica of the Romans, and to thepre-Gothic period.
