String Instruments for Folk Music

The “Trumscheit” (lit.: German: drum log) or tromba marina, is the only string instrument on which the player does not bow the string close to the bridge, but dose to the top nut. As the player stops the string, be only touches the string light- ly. This produces harmonic notes only. The tromba marina only has the same range of tones as a natural trumpet and was often used in its place. Another uni- que feature is its asymmetrical bridge. The longer end was free to vibrate over the soundboard. It begins to vibrate and drumming the soundboard as the instru- ment is played. This sound is strikingly like that of the trumpet.

The hurdy gurdy, originally known as the organistrum, became extremely popu- lar in medieval times due to the influence of clerles?. Later it became a wandering minstrel's and beggar's instrument. It flourished during the 18th century in France with magnificently decorated instrument and pieces specifically written

for it. The Nordic equivalent is the Nyckelharpa still played in Sweden today.
