Summary edit

Description

A shipment of contact-handled transuranic waste makes its way to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.

2010 --- With the help of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) received the highest number of transuranic waste shipments in a single year since waste operations began there in 1999. The 1,194 shipments WIPP received for safe, permanent disposal in 2010 beats a previous record of 1,144 shipments in 2006.

The Recovery Act accelerated the cleanup of transuranic waste generated by past U.S. defense activities at several sites across the DOE complex.
