d thatthe pinnated grouse is to some extent replacing ourprairie sharp-tail in some of the settled sections ofthe country. The ruffed grouse and the ptarmiganare found in our northern woods, where also in theproper season the varying hare darts amongst thebushes in unnumbered plentitude. On the plains thejack rabbit gives an opportunity for good sport withdogs or gun; and in the fall and winter the huntingof coyotes with horse and dogs provides many anexciting chase. The gray wolf is found in some num-bers on the southern cattle ranges doing damage tosuch an extent that a bounty is offered which shouldmake hunting and trapping of these animals profit-able to those qualified for the work. The wolves havealso been reported recently as more numerous thanusual in the far north where many of the more valu-able fur-bearing animals furnish a living to Indianand half breed although pursued and trapped for cen-turies for trading with companies whose servantshad penetrated to the wilderness. 76

Moose Hunting in Saskatchewan The value of the furs exported during these cen-turies must represent many millions of dollars; butno species of these animals has become extinctalthough they have their years of scarcity and ofplenty. The beaver seemed years ago to be destinedto early disappearance; but although there are manystretches of country where deserted beaver meadowsmay be found, these interesting animals have, underthe protection afforded them by a few close seasons,again become numerous in some suitable parts of thecountry. Xowhere can better fish be found than in thewaters of Saskatchewan; and there is quantityenough to furnish food for millions of people.
