Pig meat was very popular in Pompeii, and droves of pigs like this one, which resemble wild boar more than they do the domestic pigs of today, foraged in the woods around the city. During the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, thousands of animals and people were killed by flows of superheated ash and debris, which buried them and then hardened. As victims' bodies decomposed, they left body-shaped cavities in the ash. Archaeologists later filled these cavities with plaster of Paris, which solidified to create casts.
