as and squash, are being subjected to breed-ing and selection, following the same general method so successfulwith corn. For the self-fertilized vegetables selection methodsare being applied, those receiving principal attention being beans,lettuce and tomatoes. At the Station farm at Mt. Carmel where this work is carriedon the plant breeder is also testing such new strains of vegetablesas the Yellows-resistant Savoy Spinach originated by the Norfolk(Va.) Truck Station, a pod spot-resistant bean from the CornellStation, the Vermont Hubbard Squash, Penn State EarlianaTomato and Penn State Ball Head Cabbage from the PennsylvaniaStation, along with the varieties now standard in this region. CONNECTICUT EXPERIMENT STATION BULLETIN 274 PLANT DISEASES Celery blight causes heavy losses to market gardeners but feware equipped to spray. Dust is more easily applied but the resultsfor this season are no more encouraging- than last. Dust givessome control but Bordeaux spray is much more effective.

As a result of several years careful vv^ork it has been shown thatBlack Root Rot of tobacco is caused by Thiclaviopsis hasicola,a fungus distinct from Thielavia hasicola, which was formerlysupposed to be the asco stage. The study of mosaic has now been in progress twenty-two years.Perhaps no other plant disease has attracted so wide attention in REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR 199 recent years, many botanists having taken up this perplexingproblem. At this Station we are encouraged by recent discoverieswhich will throw further lig-ht on the nature of the disease. Abulletin is now in preparation. Apple and Peach Diseases continue to occupy much attention.The trials of new dusts and sprays, combinations of both andmethods of application, were continued in the Station orchards atMt. Carmel farm and at the farms of Mr. Piatt at Milford.
