ZuBi Indians. by a strip of red cloth trimmed with feathers. These shields are impervious to arrows, andfrequently hard enough to turn aside a ball. The gay colors and waving trails of cloth andfeathers are supposed to be useful as well as ornamental. In battle the Indians are not quietfor a moment, but, with constantly bended knees, leap rapidly from side to side, waving theirshield and its long streamers, for the purpose of dazzling the eyes of their adversaries. Apachesare said to oil their joints before going to battle, in order to make them supple.

CO O ZUNIANS.—NAVAJOS.—TONTOS. 31 The ZuSians have eyes darker and more piercing than Choctaws. Their dress consists usuallyof huckskin hunting-shirts and fringed moccasins. Their mode of cropping and dressing thehair is nearly the same as that practised hy other Puehlo Indians; sometimes it is parted uponthe forehead and confined hy a hand. It is to he regretted that we ohtained no portrait of thewhite Indians of Zuni; hut the small-pox heing prevalent among them, it was deemed impru-dent to visit their houses. Some of them, however, were seen; having light or auburn hair, faircomplexions, and hlue eyes. It is remarkahle that the first Indian from Zuni seen hy Father deNica in 1539, is described as a white man of fair complexion. A few of that type have existedthere ever since.
