This is probably why they call it Antelope Island ... :)
Just north of Salt Lake City, a causeway connects the "mainland" to the largest of 10 islands in the Great Salt Lake - Antelope Island - which I first photographed in March 2009 (the album of those photos is available here. It's the largest of the 10 islands (who knew there were that many?) in the Great Salt Lake and it has a couple of peaks high enough that they had snow on the top when I first drove out to take a look back in March. It's supposed to be a very picturesque place, with herds of antelope and bison, as well as flowers and lush grass, etc. But my first trip was too early in the season -- literally the second day of spring -- and it was dark and brooding, barren and windswept, with heavy gray clouds scudding overhead. I saw a few mangy bison, but they didn't look very happy, and certainly weren't very impressive... so I took a few pictures, and left. On a return trip to Salt Lake City in mid-May, I had a couple spare hours at the end of the day, and was lucky enough to drive up to Antelope Island in time to catch the sunset; I even saw a few antelope grazing peacefully in the meadows. It was an entirely different photographic experience, which I've tried to capture here. If you want to know more about the island and the State Park that occupies a big chunk of the island, you can find it here on the Internet. |
