| Description | Reus - Centre de Lectura, de renom i prestigi nacional, fou fundat el 1859 pel grup de menestrals i obrers d´idees properes al federalisme que s´aglutinava a l´entorn del periodista J. Güell i Mercader. Al llarg de la seva història, pel seu tarannà progressista, ha estat clausurat el 1866 i el 1939 i reobert el 1868 i el 1948. Des del 1897 el Centre és instal-lat al Carrer Major, on hi havia el Palau dels Marquesos de Tamarit, totalment desaparegut amb les obres de reforma. El 1916 l´edifici fou adquirit pel financer Evarist Fàbregas, que el cedí al Centre, i que finançà les obres de reforma. El nou edifici, amb façana de to renaixentista, amb escultures de F. Garcia i Escarré, fou dissenyat per Josep Simó i Bofarull. L´obra, d´aires presumptuosos, era designada pels periòdics satírics "la Catedral de Guix". L´edifici fou inaugurat l´octubre de 1921 pel president de la Mancomunitat J. Puig i Cadafalch. El 1939 se n´emparà la CNS que, amb altres organismes oficials o paraoficials, s´hi mantingué fins el 1948. Inclòs al Centre hi ha el Teatre Bartrina, un bell local del darrer modernisme, inaugurat el 1918. |
