English: This photo portrait from 1922 pictures Rev Donald Fraser, DD (1870-1933), the Scottish church leader and missionary, wearing his robes of office as Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland. Rev Fraser was born in Lochgilphead, Argyllshire, Scotland, the son of a Free Church minister. In his youth, Rev Fraser helped found the Student Volunteer Movement in Britain and the World Student Christian Federation before beginning missionary service in Malawi with the Free Church of Scotland. He worked in Malawi from 1896 until he returned to Scotland in 1925. He was first posted to Ekwendeni and later Embangweni. Rev Fraser worked closely with the Ngoni people. In 1922, Rev Fraser received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the University of Glasgow and he was elected Moderator of the 1922-23 General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland. From 1929 to 1933, he served as Chaplain for Scotland to George V, King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India. |
