ssional zoologist of the highest standing. It maybe used as a reference book for visitors studying thecollections of the New York Aquarium. RECORDS OF EXPLORATION. Probably the most complete account of the antarc-tic regions ever published in English is Capt. Robert P.Scotts two-volume record of The Voyage of the Dis-coicry (Scribners). Captain Scott, while not an ex-perienced writer, has much to relate of intrinsic inter-est, and the text is well supplemented by a great numberof excellent photographic illustrations by Dr. E. A.Wilson and other members of the expedition. TheDiscovery left England in the summer of 1901, and wasabsent for three years. Important observations on ant-arctic meteorology, geology, and animal life were made, and all these were recorded with scientific accuracy. Captain Amundsens recent achievement of theNorthwest Passage serves to remind us that the westand northwest coasts of America have for two centuriesbeen the theater of more or less fruitful exploration.

CAPTAIN ROBERT F. SCOTT. (Frontispiece from Vol. II. of The Voyage of the Discovery.^ 126 THE AMERICAN MONTHLY REI^IEIV OF REl^lEiVS. Vikings of tlie Pacific is tlie appropriate title givento <a new volume by Miss A. C. Laut(Macinillari), whichrecords the adventures of such explorers as Bering, theDane ; Cook and Vancouver, the English navigators;Gray, of Boston, the discoverer of the Columbia ; Led-yard, that other American, who foresaw the work ofLewis and Clark ; Francis Drake in California, andothers. Captain Amundsen has just accomplished thejourney from the Atlantic to the Pacific going west-ward, but Miss Laut reminds us that in the early daysmuch of the exploration was undertaken in the oppositedirection,—that is, from the west eastward. The im-portance of the settlements made by the Russians com-ing overland across Siberia has, perh;ips, been under-estimated in America. The final chapter of MissLautsbook is devoted to an account of the foundation of theRussian Empire on
