Summary edit

Description Sim Aat cuts rice during Rice Farming Training run by CARE, with AusAID support, at Tropang Krohom Bay, Ratanakiri. In the lowlands of Ratanakiri farmers produce around 1.2 tonnes of rice per hectare and in the highlands they produce around 800kg per hectare due to erosion, reduced crop rotation and traditional techniques. Reduced rain impacts rice yield and late or not enough rain increases the crop's vulnerability to pests such as locusts. Three variety of rice in low land areas - short, medium and long. Rice seeds are planted in May. Short variety is harvested in three months, medium in four months and long in six months. They use natural fertiliser like cow manure. To prevent crop disease farmers are trained to weed out affected rice. The community helps each other during planting and harvesting. There are more than 100 varieties of rice and around ten are popular across Cambodia. Thrashing harvesting technique is faster but stepping is also used. Photo: CARE Australia/Laura Hill.
