Description
English: This photograph appears in the c.1913 edition of 'Malta & Gibraltar Illustrated' (page 321) captioned as "Downs and Johnson's Motor Garage at Porta Reale". (Credit R. Ellis).

Blowing up the image to show the doorway into the interior of the garage it appears to show rubble / material on the floor suggesting it was not (yet) in use as a garage when the photo was taken.

The 1915 Directory 'Malta & Gibraltar Illustrated' which has this Ellis photo captioned as "Downs and Johnson's Motor Garage at Porta Reale" also says "At the time of our visit the firm had in course of construction at Porta Reale a splendid garage for the accomodation and letting out on hire of motor cars at moderate charges". We can surmise then that it was built circa 1914 and the photo shows it newly built. But must have been pulled down early 1920s prior to the re-configuration of that area and the building of Duke of York Avenue (1926)
