DescriptionRifle Butts Quarry, SSSI - geograph.org.uk - 1432258.jpg |
English: Rifle Butts Quarry, SSSI, Goodmanham, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. This shows Rifle Butts Quarry, a disused quarry and a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) near Goodmanham. It lies at the bottom of the chalk scarp at the western end of the Goodmanham Channel, a glacial spillway cut by glacial meltwaters during the Ice Age.The site is of great geological interest as the geological succession exposed reveals an "unconformity" between the mudrock and the Red Chalk, representing a period of 80 million years during which sediments deposited on the mudrocks were removed by erosion. The protective roof was erected in 1993 to afford some protection from the elements, but in recent years the site has suffered as a result of geo-vandalism, in spite of it being a SSSI, which prohibits hammering and removal of specimens. |
