Description
English: Ancient Roman sculpture of a sleeping Eros, discovered in 1920 in one of four sarcophagi in Heerlen (ancient Coriovallum), South Limburg, the Netherlands. The object made of amber was once a knife handle. The sleeping Amor, the lizzard and the torch depicted are all symbols of death. The object from the 2nd century AD, probably from Northern Italy, is now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden. This photo was taken during the temporary exhibition Topstukken van het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in the Limburgs Museum in Venlo, while the museum in Leiden was closed for renovations.
