English: River Thames and Waterloo Bridge, London The foundation stone for the present Waterloo Bridge was cut from the old bridge and laid in 1939. Known as the "ladies bridge" Waterloo Bridge was constructed mainly by women as most able bodied men were away at war. Waterloo Bridge was the first bridge to be built using reinforced concrete beams and was opened to pedestrians and two lanes of traffic in 1942. It was completed in 1945. At 1,250 ft long and 80 ft wide, Waterloo Bridge is the longest bridge in London. |
