Description |
English: A dirt road, lined by the remnants of a stone retaining wall, curves through an open landscape. Crater Rim Historic District. Road traces and remnant retaining walls are most likely from Leavitt's Road, built in 1931 to connect Uwekahuna to Halemaumau. Today, this is part of the Crater Rim Trail in the northwest corner of the crater. The road was named after park Superintendent Leavitt, who ordered that the 3.5 mile auto trail be built to connect the observatory and museum to the rim of the caldera. It was built for only $500 and took a week to complete.
