Description

Dom Sankt Peter auch Pertersdom genannt. Vollständig heißt die Kathedrale auch 'Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano' 324 ließ Konstantin der Große über dem mutmaßlichen Grab der Apostels Simon Petrus eine Grabeskirche errichten die bis 1506 bestand. Am 18 April 1506 legte dann Papst Julius II den Grundstein für die heutigen Kathedrale, den Petersdom. Die Pläne dazu stammte von Bramante der auch bis zu seinem Tod Bauleiter war. Danach waren unter anderem Raffael, Antonio Sangallo und Michelangelo Bauleiter. Der Petersplatz wurde von Bernini geplant und gebaut. Geweiht wurde die Basilika durch Papst Urban III 1626

Der Petersdom ist mit seinen 22067 Quadratmetern Grundfläche, seiner 186 m Länge, 141 m Breite und 44 m Höhe der größte Kirchenbau der Welt.
