Title
Roman Disc/Plate brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy Disc/Plate brooch of 2nd century date.

The circular plate (damaged around the edge) has an outer band, defined on each side by a ridge. The central section is slightly recessed and has a further ridge which defines a broad circular setting. At the centre of this now empty setting is a small aperture containing a possible remnant of glass paste or enamel. The ring surrounding the central setting has traces of a dark blue enamel and the outer band contains a small amount of dark green enamel. The effect of these enamels would have been enhanced by the fact that the underlying surfaces are silvered or tinned. The hinge for the pin (missing) is located close to the edge, on the reverse. It comprises two parallel lugs either side of a central gap, and two small holes for the axis bar, which is also missing. The catchplate is located on the opposite side and has a rolled top edge.

The brooch measures 25mm in diameter, 5.1mm thick and weighs 3.23g.
