Summary edit
DescriptionRoman Fort of Labrobrinta - geograph.org.uk - 769828.jpg |
English: Roman Fort of Labrobrinta The fort is one of only two outside the Hadrian's Wall complex occupied throughout the Roman period in Britain - from c70AD to c370AD. It controlled the strategic 'Ford of Montgomery' across the River Severn leading into mid Wales. In the foreground are palaeolithic river channels, probably created by glacial melt from the end of the last ice age. The wooded hill in the background is the early medieval motte and bailey Montgomery Castle (Hen Domen) occupied c1070 until c1285. This also guarded the ford. |
