Roman copper alloy disc brooch with niello inlay
Description
English: Roman copper alloy disc brooch with niello inlay, mid-late 1st century. Flat circular disc with with six evenly spaced flat rounded projections from the edge (one broken off); central raised pellet with depressed circle around (possibly a champleve enamel cell, no traces of enamel remain); then a neillo plain line border surrounded by a ring of twenty-one inlaid niello outward-pointed drop-shapes, all surrounded by a plain double-line border. The copper alloy pin is held in a double lug hinge with copper alloy bar; the tip of the pin is damaged, as is the hook of the rectangular projecting catchplate. Diameter 21.56mm, thickness 1.65mm, weight 3.88g.
