Title
Roman statue fragment, obverse
Description
English: Fragment of a copper-alloy statue. The fragment shows one eye and a portion of the nose of a human figure. The eye measures 19 mm across and 11 mm down, so the statue would have certainly been large, although not quite life sized. The reverse of the statue is smooth and the statue would have been hollow. The object is almost certainly Roman, and a comparable example of a bronze head of Hadrian (also hollow) is illustrated in Toynbee, 'Art in Britain Under the Romans' (1964, page 50-51; plate VI).
