Description

Romp of Otters. Sea Otter Mom with NOT Two Pups but ONE, Morro Bay, CA 16april2007. Photo by Mike Baird bairdphotos.com Canon 5D 600mm IS on tripod.

You have to look closely (see the full-res version at flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=462500055&size=o ) - the Mom on the left is harboring two pups - the eye of the second is at the far left of the image... the otter to the right is presumed to be an adult. Thanks to Joyce Cory for the observation. [2013 update, upon examination it is determined that there are NOT two pups with one mother here.]

7/2/2013 research noite: Joyce, in testing the Bing search engine today, I found this older 2007 "sea otter with [two] pup[s] image" that I had published, www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/462500055/ www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/462500055/sizes/o/ (full resolution) and note that you Joyce Cory said "You have to look closely (see the full-res version at flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=462500055&size=o ) - the Mom on the left is harboring two pups - the eye of the second is at the far left of the image... the otter to the right is presumed to be an adult." I said "Thanks to Joyce Cory for the observation."

In looking at this again I think the "left baby is in fact the mother. The other photos in the series (5 total showing sea otters) may help determine which ball of fur is an adult and which is a pup. www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/archives/date-taken/2007/...

Do you agree?

If this was indeed another sea otter with two pups, that would be of interest to researchers and reporters.
