English: Curtis Wheeler, aka, "Rooster" is a legendary New Orleans bluesman. 78 years young, from Mississippi.
It was complete serendipity that we ran into him. We’d just left another bar a few blocks away on Bourbon Street after enjoying some most refreshing piña coladas and watching a bit of tennis at 2 in the afternoon (this is, after all, New Orleans). Walking along Bourbon Street is something else…sensory overload. Anyway, as we’re walking I happened to catch a blues guitar in my ear, looked to my right and saw this guy sitting way back toward the end of a nearby bar. Right in front of him was an open table so I quickly went in and grabbed it. Boy, did we have a treat in store for us. We sat through two sets. Rooster was a one-man show that day. He sang and played the heck out of his Les Paul guitar against a number of blues backing tracks. All the while walking amongst the patrons, mostly women, sitting next to them and singing the lyrics to them while he played. Sometimes the lyrics were a bit vulgar, but that was OK because he confirmed we were all “grown,” particularly before one especially raucous song called, The Mirror. Some of the lyrics... “I wish you was a mirror baby… I like to see myself inside of you” “I wish you was a dresser baby… I sho’ like to ramble in yo’ draw’s” “I wish you was a greyhound bus baby… I like to ride you up and down the road” We had a blast with this bluesman and many other nice people in the bar.
