English: Roseville, NSW - 'Glass House' built c.1952, architect Harry Seidler (taken Oct 2023). The design of this house in Abingdon Road, Rosevile, was initially rejected by Kuringgai Municipal Council due to "1. A house with glass front and rear walls did not comply with a council prohibition on all main buildings unless built of brick, stone, or concrete. 2. The design was objectionable 'in that the appearance thereof is such as to be out of keeping with that of other buildings in the locality.' 3. Erection of a building of this design or appearance in Roseville would be contrary to the public interest." Seidler took the matter to court, but subsequently it was settled out of court, the house design was approved, and the house constructed. It survives in 2023, in largely original form, 70 years later. |
